About me

My name is Brendan Kenny and I am an Irish primary school teacher; I teach Computing in an independent school in NW London. I also teach Y5 Maths and am a Y5 Form Tutor.

I have been in my current school since September 2013 but taught 5th class in an Irish primary school from Sept 2003 to June 2013. In that time I developed an enormous interest in the 'Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration' around the beginning of the 20th century.

More specifically, I became hugely interested in the incredible stories of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the much less well-known but equally courageous Kerryman, Tom Crean. This interest grew in most part from my reading of 'Iceman' by Michael Smith, a children's version of 'An Unsung hero' by the same author. I made this book one of my core classroom texts after I read it and I developed an enormous interest in the subject, reading and watching as much material as I could find. I am currently reading 'By Endurance We Conquer', again by Michael Smith.

I have put together these resources for two reasons:
  1. I am preparing to do an assembly with my Year 5 Form on Sir Ernest Shackleton and the launch of the James Caird from Elephant Island on Easter Monday, 1916. I am hoping for this assembly to take place as close to this anniversary as possible.
  2. I hope that this collection of resources might prove useful to others in teaching their pupils about one of the most extraordinary and exciting episodes in human history.
Thank you for taking the time to peruse my site and I hope it may be of some use to you in the future.
